John S. Osterweis

Founder, Chairman & Chief Investment Officer

John Osterweis graduated from Bowdoin College (B.A. in Philosophy, cum laude) and Stanford Graduate School of Business (M.B.A. with top honors in Finance).

For most of his business career, he has resided in San Francisco. After graduating from business school, he served as a Senior Analyst concentrating on the forest products and paper industry for several regional brokerage firms and later for E.F. Hutton & Company, Inc. In addition to his activities as an analyst, Mr. Osterweis served as Director of Research for two firms and managed equity portfolios for over ten years.

In late 1982, Mr. Osterweis decided to devote full time to his portfolio management activities, and in April of 1983 launched Osterweis Capital Management.

For a number of years Mr. Osterweis served as a Director on the Stanford Alumni Association Executive Board, Trustee of Bowdoin College, Director and Vice Chairman of Mt. Zion Hospital and Medical Center, and President of the Board of Directors for Summer Search Foundation. He currently serves as Chairman of the San Francisco Ballet Association, Director of the San Francisco Free Clinic and the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum, President Emeritus of the San Francisco Ballet Endowment Foundation, as well as Trustee Emeritus of Summer Search Foundation and of Bowdoin College.

Mr. Osterweis is a principal of the firm and a lead Portfolio Manager for the equity and flexible balanced strategies.

Matthew K. Berler

President, Chief Executive Officer & Portfolio Manager

Matt Berler graduated from Cornell University (A.B. in History) and Harvard Business School (M.B.A.). Mr. Berler holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Society of San Francisco.

Prior to joining Osterweis Capital Management in early 2003, Mr. Berler was a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley in the Equity Research Division. He served as the Senior Analyst covering the North American Paper and Forest Products industries and as Team Leader of both the Global Paper Research Team and the North American Basic Materials Team at Morgan Stanley. He joined Morgan Stanley in 1994 as a Principal and was elected Managing Director in 1998. Prior to his employment at Morgan Stanley, he worked at Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette from 1987 to early 1994, where he was a Vice President.

Before attending Harvard, he was a Research Associate at the Institute for Defense Analyses in Alexandria, Virginia from 1983 to 1985 conducting national security studies for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Mr. Berler currently serves as Chairman of the Investment Committee for the San Francisco Jewish Community Federation, Chairman of the Finance and Investment Committees as well as Treasurer and Trustee of the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Trustee of the Shalom Hartman Institute and is a member of the California Advisory Board for the Trust for Public Lands.

Mr. Berler is a principal of the firm and a lead Portfolio Manager for the equity and flexible balanced strategies.

Alexander (Sasha) Kovriga

Vice President & Portfolio Manager

Sasha Kovriga graduated from Brandeis University (B.A. in Philosophy and History, summa cum laude), University of Massachusetts, Amherst (M.A.) and Harvard Business School (M.B.A.).

Prior to joining Osterweis Capital Management in 2002, Mr. Kovriga was a Strategy Consultant at Monitor Group in Cambridge, MA. From 1997 to 2000, he worked on projects in a variety of industries ranging from consumer products to pharmaceuticals.

Mr. Kovriga currently serves on the Board of Directors of Summer Search Foundation, Temple Emanu-El and the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival.

Mr. Kovriga is a principal of the firm and a Portfolio Manager for the equity strategy.

Gregory S. Hermanski

Vice President & Portfolio Manager

Greg Hermanski graduated from The University of California, Los Angeles (B.A. in Business/Economics).

Prior to joining Osterweis Capital Management in 2002, Mr. Hermanski was a Vice President at Robertson Stephens and Co. where he was in charge of convertible bond research. Prior to that, Mr. Hermanski was a Research Analyst covering convertible, high yield, and distressed securities at Imperial Capital, LLC and a Valuation Consultant for Price Waterhouse, LLC.

Mr. Hermanski is a principal of the firm and a Portfolio Manager for the equity strategy.

Nael Fakhry

Vice President & Portfolio Manager

Nael Fakhry graduated from Stanford University (B.A. in History, Phi Beta Kappa) and the University of California Berkeley, Walter A. Haas School of Business (M.B.A., C.J. White Scholar).

Prior to joining Osterweis Capital Management in 2011, Mr. Fakhry worked as an Associate at American Securities, a private equity firm, and as an Analyst in the investment banking division of Morgan Stanley.

Mr. Fakhry is a principal of the firm and a Portfolio Manager for the equity strategy.

Carl P. Kaufman

Vice President & Portfolio Manager

Carl Kaufman graduated from Harvard University (B.A. in Music, cum laude) and attended the New York University Graduate School of Business Administration.

Prior to joining Osterweis Capital Management in 2002, Mr. Kaufman was a senior member of the convertible bond team at Robertson Stephens, where he focused on technology and biotech securities. Prior to that, he spent nineteen years with Merrill Lynch in their Institutional Sales office, specializing in convertible bond and equity sales and trading. Mr. Kaufman completed a two-year internship in New York City with Merrill Lynch, where he was involved in securities analysis, asset management, operations, pension plan marketing, corporate finance and equity trading.

Mr. Kaufman is a principal of the firm and the lead Portfolio Manager for the fixed income strategy, which he has managed since its inception in 2002. He is also a lead Portfolio Manager for the flexible balanced strategy.

Simon T. Lee

Vice President & Assistant Portfolio Manager

Simon Lee graduated from Loyola Marymount University (B.B.A. and M.B.A.). Mr. Lee holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Society of Los Angeles.

Prior to joining Osterweis Capital Management in 2008, Mr. Lee was a key member of the investment management team at Pacific Life Insurance Company, where he managed high yield and convertible bond portfolios, originated and managed two collateralized bond obligation funds, and was actively involved in the credit default swap market for the high yield bond portfolio. Prior to that, Mr. Lee was a Research Analyst with E. F. Hutton Life and Executive Life from 1980 to 1985.

Mr. Lee is a principal of the firm and an Assistant Portfolio Manager for the fixed income strategy.

Bradley M. Kane

Vice President & Assistant Portfolio Manager

Bradley Kane graduated from Lehigh University (B.S. in Business & Economics).

Prior to joining Osterweis Capital Management in 2013, Mr. Kane was a Portfolio Manager and Analyst at Newfleet Asset Management, where he managed both high yield and leveraged loan portfolios. Before that, he was a Vice President at GSC Partners, focusing on management of high yield and collateralized debt obligations. Earlier in his career, he managed high yield assets as a Vice President at Mitchell Hutchins Asset Management.

Mr. Kane is a principal of the firm and an Assistant Portfolio Manager for the fixed income strategy.

Thomas M. Davidson

Vice President & Senior Trader

Tom Davidson graduated from Southern Connecticut State University (B.S.).

Prior to joining Osterweis Capital Management in 2003, Mr. Davidson was Senior Trader at Sand Hill Advisors in Palo Alto, CA, overseeing equity and fixed income trading. Prior to that, he held trading positions at RSS Investment Counsel in San Francisco, and Alex Brown & Sons in New York.

Mr. Davidson is a principal of the firm.

Christopher R. Lilienthal

Trader

Chris Lilienthal graduated from The University of Southern California (B.A. in Communications Arts & Sciences).

Mr. Lilienthal began his path in finance on the floor of the Pacific Stock Exchange in 1993, and subsequently worked with Volpe Welty and Company until 1995. Prior to joining Osterweis in 2003, Mr. Lilienthal was with Highmark Capital Management in San Francisco working in both equity trading and research.

Mr. Lilienthal is a member of the San Francisco Security Traders Association.
